Arcade

With Arcade, artist duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh aims to restore the age-old relationship between the village of Bazel and the polders. Arcade's zigzagging arches stand exactly where the Ringdijk crosses Verkortingsdijk. The artwork connects both sides of the interrupted Verkortingsdijk, which runs from Bazel to the ferry across the Scheldt, depicting the former relationship between polder and village. Arcade is made of corten steel, a material originally used for building ships. This is how the duo links the building to the industry on the Scheldt.

Crossing the dyke from Bazel, one experiences Arcade as a stately gateway to the polders. Walking on Ringdijk, you will see a row of arches, like windows giving you a view on nature.
