Old Swimming Pool of Spiere
Along the language border with Wallonia in West-Flanders lies the "Old Swimming Pool of Spiere" along the Scheldt. The building was built as a water purification station in 1937, but was never used that way because it was going to cost too much and was going to be too polluting. Since the well was already there, a private investor made the site into an outdoor swimming pool. One of the first in Belgium. But it soon fell into disrepair.
Intermunicipal Association Leiedal recently bought the old Spiere-Helkijn swimming pool. Under the motto "preservation through development", Leiedal wants to preserve the heritage character of the site on the one hand and improve accessibility on the other by realizing a meaningful interpretation with respect for the heritage and the green environment on the banks of the Scheldt. At this moment, they are still deciding on what to do with the building and its pool.
The site is accessible to the public. If you'd like to know more, visit www.oudzwembad.be.
