Rock Strangers

For the 2012 Beaufort sculpture festival, Belgian contemporary artist Arne Quinze developed a series of sculptures for the city of Ostend called Rock Strangers. The bright orange rocks look as if they have been washed ashore. The sculptures on Ostend's Zeeheldenplein stand in stark contrast to their natural surroundings, adding a colourful accent to an otherwise fairly neutral urban setting. Quinze's huge metal installation is intended to counterbalance the increasing uniformity of urban design. He also wants to penetrate the safe cocoon that people build around themselves in the city. Foreign elements emerge and contribute to a multicultural society.
