Z33 - Huis voor Actuele Kunst, Design & Architectuur
Z33 is an arts institution in Hasselt working at the intersection of art, design and architecture. It's got a magnificent new building and a diverse programme. Z33 stands for Zuivelmarkt 33, the former beguinage site of Hasselt. The Beguinage has fulfilled a cultural function since 1938, with the then Provincial Museum and the multidisciplinary Centre for the Arts-Begijnhof. In 1996 the two institutions merged to form the Provincial Centre for Visual Arts (PCBK). In 2002 Z33, House for Contemporary Art, grows out of this. From then on, the arts centre brings contemporary art and design together in thematic projects, with presentations in the beguinages and Wing 58.
In 2020, a new chapter started for Z33. The organisation closed the period in the beguinages and moved to Bonnefantenstraat 1. The Italian architect Francesca Torzo designed the new exhibition wing: Wing 19. The special brick exterior matches the brick architecture of both the existing exhibition building Wing 58 and the adjoining beguinage. The two wings are different, but complement each other and form a whole. They fit like a puzzle between the Jenevermuseum and the historic beguinage site.
