Westerpunt

On the western edge of De Panne, where Belgium and France meet, the Westerpunt lookout offers a panoramic view of the coastal landscape. Opened in May 2024, this sculptural concrete structure - designed by Studio MOTO in collaboration with MOUTON Engineering - rises six metres above the beach, inviting visitors to ascend its geometric low-rise staircase and enjoy views of the sea, dunes and the adjacent Westhoek nature reserve.

The design features an elongated pentagonal form made up of stair segments connected at 108 degrees, with landings that serve as resting and viewing points. At high tide, the base of the structure is partially submerged, enhancing the connection between land and sea.

Constructed entirely of concrete, Westerpunt blends in with its surroundings in terms of colour and texture, ensuring durability against the maritime climate. Its thoughtful integration into the landscape transforms a simple walk along the promenade into a dynamic spatial experience.
