Signal Monument
Rising above the former Franco-Belgian border along the Brussels - Paris motorway, the Signal Monument in Hensies is one of Belgian sculptor Jacques Moeschal’s most ambitious works. Completed in 1972, the monumental concrete structure was conceived as a landmark for motorists while commemorating the friendship between France and Belgium.
The work consists of two soaring pylons that reach a height of 57 metres and are crowned with stylised hands. Positioned on either side of the motorway, the paired elements evoke a gesture of greeting and encounter, symbolising the meeting of two nations at what was once a heavily controlled border crossing.
Today, although the border has disappeared, the monument remains a striking presence within the landscape. Visible from afar, it continues to embody ideas of connection, reconciliation and exchange across national boundaries.
