Christophorus

In the coastal dunes of De Panne stands Christophorus, a wooden sculpture by Dutch artist Gerhard Lentink. Nearly 7 metres tall, the figure resembles a giant torso in motion, as if it has just emerged from the sea and is striding purposefully towards the land.

Made of wood and steel, Christophorus pays homage to Saint Christopher: the giant who carried pilgrims across a wide, dangerous river. Its dynamic form and strategic placement at the edge of the sea symbolise the connection between the natural elements and the human journey.

As part of the permanent Beaufort Sculpture Park, this work of art blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Over the years, the sculpture's wood has developed a beautiful silver patina, further rooting it in its natural environment.
