Openluchtzwembad Abdijkaai
The open-air swimming pool on Abdijkaai in Kortrijk has a fascinating history. Built between 1864 and 1867, it was one of the first swimming schools in Flanders, highlighting the importance of personal hygiene. Fast forward to 1951-1952, the original pool was updated with a fresh design by municipal architect E. Coigné, embracing the modernist "solaria" style of the time.
This new layout features two central pools nestled within the original 19th-century structure, along with practical spaces like changing rooms, lifeguard facilities, a ticket office, and even a cafeteria. There have been some tweaks over the years, including a sunbathing area added in the 1970s, but the charm of the original design remains intact.
Today, the "Stedelijk Zwembad" is a unique gem beside the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal, where you can enjoy a swim during the summer months or check out occasional exhibitions when the weather isn’t so great. For more details, visit the website!
