Musée Matisse

The Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis is located in this town for good reason. This is where Henri Matisse was born. The museum is located in the Palais Fénelon, the former residence of the Archbishops of Cambrai. A beautiful palace, built at the end of the 18th century.

The museum has beautiful, spacious exhibition rooms and a surprisingly large collection of artwork. The permanent collection is of course mainly formed by paintings, drawings and sculptures by Henri Matisse. Next to his later work (in his well-known colorful style), there is also earlier work - such as some surprisingly gloomy and gray-looking portraits. The chronological overview makes it a compelling visit. Next to work by Matisse, you'll also find masters such as Herbin, Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Léger, Giacometti ... at the Matisse Museum. And don't skip the temporary exhibitions. A lot of interesting modern art by Matisse-inspired artists are almost always on show.
